Toronto area Metro grocery workers could strike as soon as tonight: Unifor

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:56:03 GMT

TORONTO — Metro grocery store workers in the Greater Toronto Area are gearing up to strike as early as tonight, as bargaining continues between the retailer and some 3,700 employees.Employees at 27 Metro stores in the GTA could strike as early as 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday. Unifor, the national union representing the Metro workers, called a strike vote before bargaining began, garnering 100 per cent support for the job action if a deal cannot be reached. The union says progress has been made since negotiations began June 26, but major wage, benefit and other monetary issues remain outstanding.Unifor national president Lana Payne says the bargaining committee is prepared to negotiate day and night to get a fair deal for workers. She says Metro employees deserve an agreement that addresses affordability challenges and helps workers benefit from the company’s profits. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 18, 2023.Companies in this story: (TSX:MRU)The Canadian Press

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Authorities were investigating on Tuesday whether a cylindrical object about the size of a small car that washed up on a remote Australian beach is space junk from a foreign rocket.Police had cordoned off the barnacle-encrusted object after it was discovered at Green Head about 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of the city of Perth late Sunday. The Australian Space Agency said it was liaising with other space agencies to identify the object, which appears to be partly made of a woven material.“The object could be from a foreign space launch vehicle and we are liaising with global counterparts who may be able to provide more information,” the agency tweeted. Four things to know about the rapidly changing housing market European Space Agency engineer Andrea Boyd said her colleagues believed the item that washed up from the Indian Ocean fell from an Indian rocket while launching a satellite.“We’re pretty sure, based on the shape and the size, it is an upper-s...

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Christina and it's about grocery store etiquette. Here's her email. Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! Hi Jaime. I was recently doing my grocery shopping at my favorite supermarket when I ran into a friend. We stopped to chat, and while I was chatting I reached for a jar of sauce, and I dropped it. I felt so bad. The glass shattered everywhere, spreading sauce all over the aisle. And yes, they even made the infamous "clean up in Aisle 7" announcement. I apologized to the person cleaning it up and told my friend I should focus on my shopping and that I would talk with her later. But then my friend asked if I was going to go to customer service to pay for the sauce? I couldn't believe it. I said no, it was an accident. She said anytime she broke something, she paid for it. I don't know if I believe that. I didn't pay for it, but now I'm wondering, is it an unspok...

Ask Amy: Closet shopper’s regift reveals uncomfortable dynamic

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:56:03 GMT

Dear Amy: My daughter-in-law is extremely close to her family and although she tries to show affection for us, it’s only out of obligation.A few years ago, I purchased a very expensive handbag (which I couldn’t afford) as a Christmas gift for her.On occasions I’ve been asked to clean their house and while cleaning I’ve seen the handbag in her closet. This past Christmas, I received the same bag from her.It is obvious about what transpired: While she and my son bought luxurious gifts for her family, she went shopping in her closet for me.She’s a good person but can be manipulative and narcissistic at times.I feel disrespected and unappreciated for everything I do for them (which is a lot).I would like to address her (or the two of them) about this, but I’m not sure how.A part of me just wants to put the bag back in their closet to see if I receive it a second time, or to give her instructions on how to properly “regift,” which includes putting the name of...

“I’ve blamed her crazy plays on those glasses,” Cy the Cynic told me, “but she got me for the second time this week. I think she’s an expert masquerading as a little old lady.”Minnie Bottoms wears old bifocals that make her mix up kings and jacks, often to her opponents’ dismay. Cy has been her chief victim.“Minnie was East,” Cy said, showing me today’s deal. “Against my 3NT West led the jack of spades, and Minnie played the eight(!) on dummy’s queen. When I led a diamond next, West won and led his last spade, forcing out my ace. I could win only eight tricks before Minnie took her ace of diamonds and good spades.”JACK OF SPADES“She thought her spades were J-10-8-7-6-4-2 and West’s jack was the king,” I said.“I’m not so sure,” the Cynic growled. “Her defense was correct. If she covers the queen of spades, I duck and break the defenders’ communication.”&...
