Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:36:57 GMT

By Margaux Laskey, The New York TimesIf you’re the holiday cruise director in your life (i.e., the one who does the bulk of the planning, shopping and cooking), I hope you’re still in your pajamas as you read this, sipping something warm and delightful IN A QUIET HOUSE (emphasis my own, and very much intended). We’re broke, 2. We’re exhausted, and 3. We’re cold. Most of these double and triple like a dream, so you can make a double batch and freeze one as an investment in your future happiness come February when the weather’s dreary, you (or the kids) are down with the flu, and you haven’t had time to make it to the store.1. Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:36:57 GMT

Daniel Clowes sets the stage for his latest graphic novel, Monica, by jumping right into the deep end of history’s primordial slop — protozoa, dinosaurs, pharaohs, Christ, plague, Columbus, Hitler, the bomb, a dying JFK, and the Beverly Hillbillies all make colorful cameos on the opening pages. Then you start meeting the characters, including a soldier in Vietnam and his girl back home, Penny, who steps out with a snarky hipster painter fond of jerking the chains encumbering the bourgeoisie: “Don’t you love rich people? They’re so happy and they smell great! … We have to warn them about the revolution! ATTENTION BARONS OF INDUSTRY: DOOM IS NIGH! BOARD YOUR WINDOWS!”The flighty (not to say bipolar? schiz?) Penny moves from apartment to apartment and man to man and a couple of years later begets the book’s namesake, who spends much of her life seeking out the identity of her father. Finding success by following in her mother’s hippie-entrepreneurial footsteps when she opens a shop sell...

I’m well aware that New Year’s resolutions are often abandoned by the end of January, but that’s no reason to avoid thinking about how we can improve our lives in the year to come. As a tech journalist, I’m not going to lecture you about getting to the gym more often, although I, and probably you, could benefit from a bit more exercise. Instead, I’ll focus on how to use your tech devices and services to make them more secure and more supportive of your mental and physical health.Related ArticlesBusiness | Magid: Meta, Ray-Ban release second-generation smart glasses Business | Larry Magid: 2023 has been a tumultuous year for tech Business | Magid: Turning ordinary small appliances into smart ones Business | Magid: Using a personal computer to read and send texts Security, backup, passwordsLet’s start with basic security. By Matt Egan | CNNNew York — Gas prices will fall in 2024 for the second year in a row, according to GasBuddy projections shared exclusively with CNN.GasBuddy, which had a forecast for 2023 that proved to be eerily accurate, expects US gas prices will average $3.38 a gallon in the key election year of 2024.That would represent a significant improvement from 2023’s average of $3.51 a gallon and an even bigger drop from 2022’s average of $3.95. Gas prices skyrocketed to record highs that year as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine set off global shockwaves.Even though the Russia-Ukraine war lingers and there is a risk the Israel-Hamas war spills into a regional conflict, GasBuddy is betting drivers will get more relief in 2024. GasBuddy expects Americans will spend about $32 billion less on fuel than in 2023 and $79 billion less than in 2022.“Next year should represent a continued march towards what most Americans would consider normal prices at the pump,” Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy’s head of...
