Zoo Miami’s Animal Health team members have successfully released a juvenile Green Sea Turtle back into the wild after being treated for hook injuries. On Wednesday, the turtle was released from Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne, following a two-week stay at Zoo Miami’s Sea Turtle Hospital. The turtle was brought to the hospital by an FWC officer on March 13 after being hooked by a recreational fisherman off of the Dania Beach Pier. Upon arrival, Dr. Marisa Bezjian, Associate Veterinarian at Zoo Miami, removed the hook from the turtle’s mouth. Further examination revealed two additional hooks lodged in the turtle’s esophagus, which were also successfully removed by Dr. Bezjian. After making a full recovery, the turtle was deemed fit for release. However, the incident highlights the ongoing challenge sea turtles face with unintentional injuries caused by fishermen. If you accidentally hook a sea turtle while fishing or encounter one entangled in the fishing ...

Miami has dropped three straight games to Brooklyn, Toronto and New York, landing in seventh place in the hotly contested Eastern Conference. Miami is only 1 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta and Toronto and 3 1/2 games ahead of Chicago with five games left. But with the pressure mounting, Heat center Bam Adebayo has confidence that the team will persevere.“There’s a lot of dudes in here that have been against the odds a lot more than just a couple of games,” said Adebayo, who is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game. “So it’s easy to keep confidence when you s...

New Bedford fatal fire determined to have started accidentally

Investigators have determined the devastating fire that killed two people in a New Bedford apartment building started accidentally, with the most likely cause involving a microwave or wall outlet. The Tuesday afternoon fire started on the second floor of the four-story, 31-unit building, which authorities have referred to as a rooming house.Investigators discovered the fire, originating in room 205, likely stemmed from “an event involving a microwave in that location or the wall outlet it was plugged into. The microwave had been in use a short time before the fire broke out,” according to the state Department of Fire Services.“Electrical fires are the second-leading cause of residential fire deaths in Massachusetts,” state Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey said in a release. “Appliances that generate heat, like microwaves and toasters, should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet. Stocks rally as Wall Street heads for winning March, quarter

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:25:32 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are rallying Friday, as Wall Street closes out a winning March and first quarter of the year despite a long list of worries for investors. The S&P 500 was 1.1% higher in afternoon trading. It’s on pace for a 3.1% gain for the month and a second winning quarter in a row after tumbling through most of last year on worries about high interest rates meant to get inflation under control. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 325 points, or 1%, at 33,185, as of 3:05 p.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 1.4% higher. Friday’s gains came after a report showed inflation across the United States slowed in February, though it was still high relative to history. A continued slowdown could give the Federal Reserve more leeway to take it easier on interest rates after jacking them higher at a furious pace over the last year. The threat of higher rates has been behind the stock market’s struggles since it peaked in early 2022. High rates can undercut inflat...
